                                                                       Only Three More Days
After this week there is only three more days of school for 1st to 7th graders. The 8th grade graduates on June 1, 2011 and on to high school in the fall. This will be my last 5A Allstars newsletter for this "2010-2011" school year. Tomorrow, I plan to take the fifth graders for a practice try to open the lockers with a combination lock. I also plan to have this years sixth graders come to speak to them about their first year in junior high. I would like to say "Thanks" to all of the parents/guardians for making this year with your child one of my most memorable years.
                                                               The Extended Summer Program
The extended summer program will begin near the end of July. This program is to help students to be successful in school. They are able to review what they may have forgotten in the last school year before the 2011 - 2012 school begins. Summer school for some is inevitable. If they did not do well in regular school it would be advisable that they attend one or both of the two summer programs that will be available. The other program will be the Boy"s and Girl"s Club that will begin on June 8, 2011 for a half a day. According to Mr. Sain, there will be only three weeks of the 21st Century summer program. All schools and their summer programs must be aligned with the Illinois Core Assessments. Every student in the United States are following the same core standards. Just maybe if they attend they will try harder in fall school where they might not have to attend. Please look out for flyers and applications telling you more about these programs.
The End of the School Year Project
Last year in social studies, students learned about the Medieval Period. The students last year learned about the kings, lords, ladies, serfs, and much more. They also learned about jousting, moats, government, and sanitation and hygiene when it came to the place where they lived, their bodies, the foods they ate, and the types of clothing they wore. At the end of the last school year students took a picture frame and a character from the time period and framed their person with an essay about their person for display in the hall. This year was a different from last years fifth graders. 5A and 5B studies the Civil War Period pre and post. 5A created a hall display one of the worst wars in American history. They worked in groups to create a time line, collect maps and pictures, famous generals both Union (Yankees) and Confederacy (Rebels), the Emancipation Proclamation, "A Nation Divided," and finally an enactment or replication of a very important battle held at Appottomax River. All of the students help in putting the final display in the Intermediate wing of Laraway. The battle scene was created by Braden Washington. Kudos to all 5A & 5B students in learning about this war! I just want to say "Goodbye" to all of my students. Stay safe and enjoy this summer. I will see you in passing or when you come to visit me in the fall. Please flip over for my last message. Thanks!
